Grid Lock

Last weeks attemps to get onto I465 during the day at 71st or 86th have been very stressful events. Traffic has been slow and backedup. It took me 20 minutes to get from 86th and Zionsville Road to the southbound I465 ramp. I hope it gets better but am afraid it is going to get worse. I may start using the 56th Street ramps to get onto I465. Exiting off I465 at 71st and 86th is not as bad.

The majority of the work will be done by the end of this year. The only thing left to be done in 2007 is the completion of the new ramp from northbound I465 to 73rd street. I am kind of excited about this ramp. I have heard about it for years and never thought I would see it completed. I am really curious to see how many people use it. For people that work in Park 100 it could be a boom or a bust depending on traffic patterns and if that put any more stop lights in key intersections. Time will tell.

Traffic Report

by @ 6:21 pm. Filed under Traffic Patterns

Starting Saturday, April 22, all traffic on 71st Street will be shifted to existing westbound lanes between Corporate Drive and Intech Boulevard. One lane of through traffic will be maintained in both directions on 71st Street. This restriction will continue until August, at which point all traffic will be shifted to the newly constructed eastbound lanes to allow the second phase of construction on the westbound lanes.

As early as Wednesday, April 26, a similar traffic pattern will be put in place on the eastbound lanes of 86th Street. All ramps and travel lanes are anticipated to be open to unrestricted traffic by November 2006. INDOT asks all motorists entering the work zone to reduce their speed and pay close attention to posted signs and instructions.

This year’s construction is the third phase in a four-year project to widen I-465 in the northwest quadrant of Indianapolis and upgrade bridges and interchanges at 71st, 79th and 86th Streets. This year’s project will reconstruct the ramp systems at the 71st and 86th Street interchanges. For illustrations and other information, visit the I-465 Northwest FastTrack project Web page at:
